What makes these slides special

  • ▶ Run on every code example: watch the output appear (all outputs were produced by real Java 21)
  • Step-through tracer: run a program line by line and watch variables, objects, method calls and recursion
  • Code Lab (press L): edit code, copy it, download the .java file or open an online Java compiler
  • Playgrounds: jshell sessions, substring visualiser, loop ranges, array/list/map/queue animations, stack and heap memory diagrams
  • Real JDBC database examples with SQLite, file I/O with the files shown, and multithreading demos
  • Each module: real-project diagram, short concept boxes, lab, 10 practice examples (Easy, Medium, Hard), recap and quiz

Setup for students

  1. Install JDK 21 (Eclipse Temurin from adoptium.net); check with java -version
  2. Install VS Code + Extension Pack for Java, or IntelliJ IDEA Community
  3. Make a folder D:\java-practice; run any file with java Main.java
  4. Module 20: download sqlite-jdbc jar (github.com/xerial/sqlite-jdbc) into the folder; run with java -cp ".;sqlite-jdbc.jar" Main.java
  5. No JDK yet? Use the Online compiler button in the Lab (needs internet)
